Choosing the Best Treats for Your Doggo

Treats are great for showing your doggo a little more love. Those yummies can be practically anything, from a morsel of steak from your plate to the dog biscuit you bought at the grocery store. The question is, how do you choose the right treats for your dog?

Dogs deserve to be given treats occasionally. Treats can be quite beneficial for them. Some are created to promote good canine dental health. They can also give these dogs great motivation during training or when you just want to encourage good behavior.

While you’re giving treats to your dog, you feel good about each other and this contributes to strengthening that bond that you share between you.

The problem is that not all treats are beneficial to your dog. If you don’t choose carefully, you may end up giving your pet something high-sugar and/or high-fat. As you probably know, these two can lead to weight gain, especially as it’s usually hard to keep a tab on how much your pet has received within a day. Almost half of pets in the United States are overweight, and that puts them at greater risk for developing all kinds of health issues.

Depending on activity level, a 20-pound dog can only burn 700 calories daily. If your dog gets two to three 100-calorie biscuits everyday, that may be too much.

If you have an overweight dog or to prevent your dog from being overweight, give treats only on special occasions or choose low-calorie treats instead. It’s also good to be particular about the maker of treats you give your dog. Betsy Farms, for example, has built a reputation for making nutritious and tasty dog treats, such as the immensely popular Betsy Farms chicken jerky.

As for table scraps, the problem is that they’re usually high in fat and sugar and can easily upset your pet’s tummy, apart from destroying his appetite for healthy food altogether. That’s why when the family’s eating, it’s always best to keep your pet away from the dining room.

So how do you pick the right treats for your beloved pet?

First off, you’d like to choose treats that are made especially for dogs. An example would be Betsy Farms duck jerky dog treats which your pet will absolutely enjoy without causing health issues.

Get treats with extra nutrients or dental benefits too. Or give your dog some veggies like green beans and carrots, which are low in calories and high in fiber.

Keep in mind that there are some table foods – for example, chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes – that may be toxic to dogs. Finally, if you’re in doubt about giving your dog a certain type of food, ask your veterinarian for more info just to be sure. Or simply stick to established dog food brands, such as Betsy Farms.
